Other Works: Where the Creative Spirit Leads

Sometimes art "just happens." Sometimes we start with an idea or, in our case, a piece of fabric that speaks to us. Who knows where it will take us?

2003-2004
"My World in Black and White" Ontario Museum of Art and History, CA, 2003-2004

Black and white is a basic, yet fascinating, combination. This originally started as an attempt to marble solely black on white, and white on white. The attempts were not successful initially, as the pattern was too intense with the amount of black, and the lighter attempts were too orange in tone (from left-over color in the marbling tray).

After some playing around, the piece evolved into another weaving, very long for a particular space on a wall. Woven with some plain-colored fabric and accented with hints of orange, the piece became balanced. The piece began to “glow” with the accent of the orange through some simple quilting on the vertical pieces, as well as a “hint” of orange quilting on the horizontal pieces.

Determining the weaving led to some interesting design decisions on the horizontal, with skipping space in the center of the strips to let that orange marbling come forward. The groupings were done in odd numbers, and as they went together, having eight long pieces with edges extended was too much. So the plain pieces were “wrapped,” to indicate some restraint in the piece.

Beads were added on the bottom, from an original series of three, including orange, to just one teardrop on each point. Other beads were added to to top of each point, along with the marbled ribbon for the hanging system.

This piece was part of the online exhibit "My World in Black and White," and it traveled to the Ontario Museum of Art and History for a show November-January, 2004.
